Women's Health on the Decline
What's happening & what you can do to get back on track
Okay, ladies, although you may have heard that women's life expectancy rate has risen 6 years from 1960 to 2000, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that 19% of the female population is experiencing a declining or stagnant mortality since 1980 (April 21, 2008, Press Release). Yikes! The study indicates that depending on where you live in the country --- Deep South, Southern portion of the Midwest, parts of Texas and Appalachia --- preventable diseases and lagging health care are causing women's health to get worse or not get better. By the way, Virginia is part of that decline! Not only that, but researchers estimate that the rest of American women are trending on the same path. So, what can you do? Well, there is a really great way to kick start a health routine or improve your existing routine. Kicking off on Mother's Day, May 11, until May 17, women all across America will be celebrating National Women's Health Week. National Women's Health Week, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health, has been set up to encourage women to join their friends and their communities to improve physical and mental health and prevent disease by:
  • Engaging in physical activity most days of the week
  • Eating a nutritious diet
  • Visiting a healthcare or wellness provider for regular check-ups and preventive screenings
  • Avoiding risky behaviors, like smoking and not wearing a seatbelt

There are many local, regional, and national groups recognizing Women's Health Week by distributing information, offering discounted or free services to improve your health, and organizing events to educate and activate. Find out what is happening in your area, as well as nationwide, by going to womenshealth.gov. You can also find excellent resources and articles on a number of women's health topics by clicking here.

Velvetbell.com encourages all aspects of staying healthy --- both physically and mentally. Many of our partners are offering services that will improve both --- from offering free wellness classes to honoring discounts on many relaxation services. See the article below, "Queen for a Day ... and Beyond," for promotions honoring the women in our lives.

By Sandra Semaan, Beauty Editor

Let's face it ladies, it's doubtful that the man in your life or your kids are going to read this article. So unless you're doing something for yourself --- and this is entirely acceptable and highly encouraged --- it's up to you to let your family know what you want for Mother's Day. If you're tired of the usual lunches, flowers, and last minute gifts, consider these options.

Ask the Beauty Editor

Dear Beauty Editor: When ever my husband shaves, he gets ingrown hairs that turn into red, irritated bumps. Sometimes the bumps also fill up with puss, looking like acne or pimples. What can he do for this?

--- Courtney in Philadelphia, PA

Dear Courtney: What your husband and so many other men have is called folliculitis, an irritation of the hair follicles often caused by a coarse, wiry beard, or improper shaving practices. When the hair grows into and under the skin it creates a bacterial infection. Pseudofolliculitis, i.e. razor bumps, does not contain pus. The goal here is to alleviate the irritation, and dry up and disinfect any infected area. For the irritation, your husband should remember the following: any movement on or around the beard area should be done in the direction of hair growth, i.e. cleansing, shaving, etc.; use a gentle exfoliant prior to shaving about two to three times a week especially on a moustache or any area that is not regularly shaved; use a cooling gel shave cream, or a shave oil like Dermalogica's Pro Shave. For disinfection, he can use over the counter products that contain salicylic acid that will break up the impaction and kill bacteria without drying out his skin. Tend Skin is such a product. Lastly, to calm and sooth the area, he should use an alcohol free post shaving product with ingredients like tea tree, chamomile, green tea – anything soothing for the skin. Any of these tips also work for women with razor bumps. Good luck.

Supporting Breast Cancer Walk

Did you know that every 3 minutes someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer? The Avon Foundation recognizes this alarming truth by hosting a two-day walk in several cities across the country to raise money for breast cancer research and support of patients. The Washington, DC, Breast Cancer Walk is the weekend of May 3-4. The streets of DC and surrounding neighborhoods will be flooded with thousands of men and women in pink shirts walking a whopping 39.3 miles and raising a minimum of $1,800 per person.

The Velvetbell.com staff is proud to be among those walking in and supporting this 2-day event. Please show your support by honking, waving, clapping, and cheering for the walkers around DC that weekend. To provide a monetary donation, visit the donatation page. If you know someone who is a survivor of breast cancer or who has lost the battle, and would like them honored in this walk, please email us at support@velvetbell.com with the name of the person, and we will add the name to our bib, which will then be pictured in the May newsletter.
